Avedis Foundation has just announced it has awarded a $55,000 grant to The Salvation Army Red Shield Youth Center to support its year-round after-school and summer youth programming, helping to ensure that children have access to a safe and supportive environment.
The Red Shield Youth Center serves local youth ages six to 18 through affordable programming focused on academic success, healthy lifestyles, character development and leadership.
“The Red Shield Youth Center provides far more than afterschool care,” Avedis Foundation President and CEO Dr. Kathy Laster said. “Julio Sanchez and his dedicated staff offer children a safe place to learn, grow, and develop meaningful relationships with caring adults.”
The grant will help keep participation costs low for families while providing scholarships for children who would otherwise be unable to attend due to financial hardship.
Each school day, the Red Shield Youth Center offers homework assistance, mentoring, a healthy meal, snacks, recreation, and enrichment activities that help build confidence, strengthen relationships, and prepare children for future success. The Red Shield Youth Center currently serves an average of 65 children each day and welcomes youth from Shawnee and surrounding communities.

Through partnerships with local schools, families, and community organizations, The Salvation Army continues to provide life-changing opportunities that empower youth to reach their full potential academically, socially, physically, and spiritually.
